Born January 15, 1929  in Atlanta, Georgia     Married June 18, 1953 (Coretta Scott-King) Marion, Alabama   Assassinated April 4th, 1968 (age 39) Memphis, Tennessee

Based on his exceptionally high college entrance exam scores at Booker T. Washington High School during his Junior year, Dr. King, Jr. was advanced immediately to collegiate studies at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. He was only 15 years of age when he attended college (His brilliance resulted in him skipping his freshman and senior years of high school).  He graduated from Morehouse in 1948 with a B.A. in Sociology.  He immediately applied and was accepted at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, PA.  He also attended the University of PA.  He was president of his senior class, valedictorian, recipient of the Pearl Plafker Award (most outstanding student) and the J. Lewis Crozer Fellowship for graduate studies at Crozer. He graduated from Crozer  in 1951 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. He became an ordained minister in 1948  (age 19) at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. and accepted the position of Assistant Pastor.
  2. He was assigned a calling as the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL between 1954 – 1959.
  3. From 1957-1968 he was the Founder & President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference  & co-pastor with his father at Ebenezer.
  4. He was president of the Montgomery Improvement Association 1955-1956 & Vice President of the National Sunday School & Baptist Teaching Union Congress of the National Baptist Convention.

In 1948 he began his graduate studies in Systematic Theology at Boston University and simultaneously studied at Harvard University. He earned his Ph. D. degree, a Doctorate of Philosophy in Systematic Theology from Boston U. in 1955. His dissertation was titled ” A Comparison of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Wieman”.   He has a long list of honorary degrees both nationally and internationally. His credentials, memberships, titles, accomplishments and acts are endless. They extend well beyond what most Americans know him for ( Civil Rights Movement).

His Christian principles were uncompromising in terms of the greater causes and good of society. His faith  was one that did not include violence despite the deeply rooted frustration over the blatant unfairness and injustices practiced against him, his race and others in this country not so long ago.  To add insult to injury he was living in a country wherein the majority of the population proclaimed proudly its adherence to Christian principles and morals.  If you can say that a country has a soul, this was a volatile time when the United States was being ripped apart much like it had been when the idea of abolishing slavery was brought to the table.  Once again America was forced to stare at itself in the mirror and witness, inspect and analyze some of the darkest and ugliest parts of its soul. The growing pains that accompany maturity and change seem insurmountable at times. Just to get society to see it was wrong was one impossible feat. The next step is to get society to admit it was wrong.  It sounds simple on paper, but its as painful and traumatic as taking a scalpel to your body and then cutting down to your soul to expose the filthiest of thoughts and emotions without anesthesia. To expose these issues in a single soul is painful and blinding enough in the light, but to do it with an entire nation is unconscionable. These are parts of us we hadn’t been forced to bring to the surface for generations. They were so intertwined in every day life few people even viewed it as wrong much less un-Christian. To bring muck like this into the light causes third degree burns on the soul and mind. Growing pains hurt which is why they are called growing pains. This country should not have been able to survive the violence and division it endured when slavery was abolished or the terror, violence and division it endured when a minority group dared to challenge segregation, inequality, lower compensation, unfair employment practices, and more.  America did survive and is surviving. We are indeed blessed by God despite our transgressions. We are a mighty nation and have the ability to continue to improve and grow. We must keep looking in the mirror and never allow the fear of what we might find to outweigh the faith we  have in God’s forgiveness and society’s forgiveness along with the ability to change and survive the pain.

Many of the beneficiaries of this movement were some of the worst critics of the movement. In other words Civil Rights did not just benefit Black Americans. The benefits are still present in the work place for WOMEN of all races,  Latinos, American Indians, East Indians, Arabs, all Asian races, the DISABLED and more. So many people lose sight of the fact that this movement touched all the corners of America because it was for all Americans who experienced discrimination on any level.  The reason we walk into office buildings now and see women and diversity in a variety of positions beyond and including clerical staff is based on this Civil Rights Movement. Let us not forget this. Dr. Martin Luther King and the many unknown heroes paved the way for ALL of us.

The movement was funded by wealthy Black, White and Jewish Americans. Many White Americans peacefully marched, protested and died beside Black Americans. If there was not a large number of diverse Americans opposing Jim Crow laws and the like, the movement could have failed, given its many obstacles. Another factor that forced our politicians to take action was the fact that America was sprawled across the front pages of the European newspapers and other media sources. Europeans were witnessing and reading about the fire hose incidents and other violence imposed on the peaceful protesters. Their leaders were contacting our leaders and asking about the atrocities. The power of the voice of the people was set into motion.

Dr. Martin Luther King and others dared to expose the unexplored caves of America.  One can only expect that when you force an entire country to look at itself naked in the mirror and measure itself against Biblical principles, you are bound to incite fear and terror which evolves quickly into violence and more hatred… initially.  In other words, your life is on the line. The men and women of this movement knew this and sacrificed their lives and the lives of their families.  They recognized a higher calling and saw the bigger picture for future generations. They were big enough to know it wasn’t about them.

We often think about the laws & rights which followed the Civil Rights Movement, but how many of us thank Dr. Martin Luther King and others for the wake up call of  our own transgressions which we would have otherwise gladly taken to our graves and never sought forgiveness for discriminatory practices as the norm throughout much of our society?  It was so deeply rooted in society and family structures that many did not consider it a sin or question it.

How many practices are currently part of our every day lives that we no longer ponder if  they qualify as transgressions or sins?  We have become so numb and desensitized in some areas of our every day lives. Let us never become so complacent that we lose the willingness and strength it takes to examine ourselves continually and make the necessary adjustments to remain in line with the same principles this country claims its foundation.

True Christians never claim perfection or a self righteousness. We simply acknowledge we will always have to live with the consequences of our past mistakes, faults, and sins as the sins we acknowledge & repent upon are eradicated. We promise to always take a good long hard look in the mirror at ourselves and recognize our flaws are too many in number for us to conquer without God’s continual intervention. We promise, that with God’s Hand in our lives, we will embrace, accept and show Christian love for every person on this planet regardless of race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, religion, belief, physical challenge, economic or social status, etc.   We don’t have to agree, but we do have to love and therein is the challenge and call of every Christian.

Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all of those who died and served for the greater cause of all of America. Your DREAM is our reality and we are still working on it.  Fear followed by hatred and violence will always exist, but we don’t have to stand by idly and let it consume and rule us because we live in a great country called the United States of America.

GOP TAKES THE HOUSE – OTHER RESULTS IN THE STATES

Bookmark and Share

Dear Politicians,

We ask that you uphold your promises. Stay true to your word and CONGRATULATIONS to all those who have won their office and/or seat. Every last one of you remain in our prayers. We are counting on you to leave your egos in the dresser drawer and come to work every day with the American people in mind. Who are we? We are the poor, middle class, upper class, employed and unemployed, male and female, black, brown, yellow, red and white, young, old, & middle aged, physically challenged & mentally challenged, Christians & non-Christians, liberals & conservatives, Republicans and Democrats,  and everyone else in between.

The GOP takes the majority in the House of Representatives.  The Senate majority remains with the Democrats, but it appears they’ve lost six seats. This has been the change the GOP has been talking about and hoping for early on in President Obama’s term. We hope everyone is able to work together and recognize and acknowledge the seriousness of our country’s dilemma. We can’t afford to squander any time as people continue to lose their jobs, lose unemployment compensation, lose their homes and nearly everything that makes Americans feel safe and warm. This country must stop with blaming one leader over another or one party over another and simply pull together and get the job done.

There have been a lot of turn overs in this race and many Americans welcome the change and the balance that has been brought to Washington D.C..  This was a mid-term election and Republicans showed up and showed out in large numbers as if it was a general election. This is how Americans can be inspired and this is how Americans should be inspired in all camps, from all walks of life and from all parties.

What is the plan now? The GOP has made it very clear in their speeches that they want taxes reduced and jobs generated. They also expect small businesses to start hiring again. We have also heard  the GOP will do what it can to put a stop to health care reform as President Obama has presented it to date. The people of America had the opportunity to speak today and they have done so in large numbers.  Whether you are for or against these most recent changes, we should give every politician the opportunity and respect to do his or her job effectively.

Another common issue in speeches we heard through the evening and early morning is that no bill will be passed without it being read first. Of course the focus of this statement is the Health Care Reform bill. It has always been a source of contention for voters when we hear or see how bills are really passed. Its been reported that very few bills are read through from beginning to end because of their volume, complexity & time constraints. This is not an isolated issue with the Health Care Reform bill.  Holding our politicians accountable regardless of party lines is the key. Follow their voting records and attendance records. Compare their voting records with the promises that lined their campaign speeches. Make no exceptions and remain objective in your assessments. Any one of us can promise anybody anything at any given time. The test of character is delivering on those promises.

There’s been a shift in everything from the gubernatorial races to the House races and even turnover in the Senate even if the majority remains with the Democrats.  We invite all of you to check out who won which race and in which state by clicking on the attached link for PROJECT VOTE SMART

WHAT IS A LIBERTARIAN?

Bookmark and Share

“If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.”     C. S. Lewis

We have blogged a little about the Tea Party, Democratic Party, Republican Party, Green Party & now the Libertarian Party. As stated previously, politics effect health care, business, education, recruiting, marketing, economics & unemployment.

DID YOU KNOW WOMEN WERE GRANTED THE RIGHT TO VOTE IN 1920 AFTER A LONG BATTLE  IN THE U.S.A.?

LIBERTARIAN: THE PARTY of PRINCIPLE (Smaller Government * Lower Taxes * More Freedom)

Libertarians believe in a multi dimensional political view (as opposed to liberal vs. conservative). Libertarians support the guiding principle of “mutual respect for rights”. In other words, Person (A) has control over his own life until that control infringes upon Person (B)’s ability to control Person (B)’s own life.

Below statements are courtesy of Wikipedia:

“…The Libertarian Party is a United States political party founded on December 11, 1971.[1] In the 30 states where voters can register by party there are over 225,000 voters registered with the Libertarian Party, making it the third largest of America’s parties.[2] Hundreds of Libertarian candidates have been elected or appointed to public office, and thousands have run for office under the Libertarian banner.[3]

The political platform of the Libertarian Party reflects that group’s particular brand of libertarianism, favoring minimally regulated, laissez-faire markets, strong civil liberties, minimally regulated migration across borders, and non-interventionism in foreign policy that respects freedom of trade and travel to all foreign countries…”[4]

FAMOUS LIBERTARIANS: Dean Koontz, Ray Bradbury, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis  and Green Day’s front man, Billie Joe Armstrong (for more celebrities click here: http://ucllibertarians.com/celebrities.html

AMERICA OUTRAGED OVER “OUTSOURCED” NBC (Outsourcing in America)

Bookmark and Share

In the event you haven’t heard or seen by now, NBC has aired a show named OUTSOURCED. It is based on a film by John Jeffcoat. It aired on Thursday, September 23, 2010.  This is a sitcom which depicts an American male being assigned to manage a call center in Mumbai, India (formerly Bombay) where the order processing department has been relocated or rather outsourced. Initially we heard a great deal of ranting & raving from the American population about this show. Comments ranged from the show’s insensitivity to poor timing to television executives being out of touch or not seeming to care. Several weeks later we began hearing from members of the Indian culture as they compared the show to the sitcoms here in America that “use to” depict minority Americans in a negative or condescending light.

We were fairly amazed at the timing of the show and were unable to determine if it was meant to lift the spirits of Americans and Indians through irony and sarcasm.  Nevertheless there are petitions on FACEBOOK protesting and boycotting the show and all of NBC.  Some loyal viewers of NBC are refusing to stop on that channel ever again even if it means giving up sports and some of their favorite shows and movies. There are a few former variations on this show. “Going for An English”; “Mumbai Calling” and “Goodness Gracious Me”.  They are all foreign based. While “experts” are presenting the question whether or not people SHOULD be outraged about this or whether or not the show can be described as offensive to Americans and-or the Indian culture, real people with and without jobs all over the world have voiced their opinions loud and clear. Some say its a travesty because people have actually received jobs (acting) by making fun of people without jobs during a time when this country and even other countries could conceivably drown in this recession. By drowning, they mean rioting in the streets for a loaf of bread kind of drowning. One gentleman said that until the executives at NBC have been out of work, depleted all their savings and investments and lost everything they own, they can’t begin to identify with the average American. In addition, they said even if NBC could identify or are identifying with the American citizen, they still find the jobless hysterical because people who have money find people without money laughable, entertaining, and think of them as existing for their entertainment.

We have searched high and low for responses to comments like these from NBC and we were unable to locate any. It is not to suggest they don’t exist, but perhaps they were not listed in a more prominent position in the search engines or on the Internet websites.  Is there money to be made from the static and comments SURROUNDING a show versus the show itself? It would be no different than what reality television stars do or celebrealities like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. Their names alone generate an income. They don’t have to worry about whether or not their shows are a hit. They just need to be certain people continue talking about them and people want them to make appearances with them, their products or services. In a world where you can brand just about anything, could that be NBC’s hidden strategy? Release a show about Americans losing jobs in the middle of a recession, make it a comedy and watch it explode in popularity before it even airs…?

Is the signing of the NAFTA agreement the cause of our “Outsourced” reality here in America?  (North American Free Trade Agreement – January 1, 1994 during the Clinton Administration).

KNOWLEDGE & WISDOM ARE KEY FACTORS IN ALL DECISIONS. We never suggest jumping onto just any band wagon merely based on popularity or to maintain a status quo throughout the generations. Become as familiar as you can with the overtones and more importantly the UNDERTONES of any group, organization, or club. Investigate, read & learn because you owe it to yourself and the group you are considering joining.

TEA PARTY: “A community committed to standing together, shoulder to shoulder, to protect our country and the Constitution upon which we were founded!” (http://teapartypatriots.ning.com/). “The name “Tea Party” is a reference to the Boston Tea Party, whose principal aim was to protest taxation without representation.[4][5] Tea Party protests have sought to evoke images, slogans and themes from the American Revolution, such as tri-corner hats and yellow Gadsden “Don’t Tread on Me” flags.[2][6] The letters T-E-A have been used by some protesters to form the backronym “Taxed Enough Already” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_Party_protests)

“The Tea Party protests are a series of protests across the United States beginning in early 2009; see List of Tea Party protests, 2009. The protests are part of a nascent, larger anti-tax political movement called the Tea Party movement.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_Party_protests)

“ In 2009, the modern Tea Party movement got underway shortly after President Barack Obama took office and he and House Democrats subsequently passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 without a single Republican vote. The stimulus act became law in February…” http://usconservatives.about.com/od/glossaryterms/a/Tea-Party.htm

“A new grassroots phenomenon is sweeping the nation — Tax Day Tea Parties. One of the leading sponsoring organizations, the American Family Association (AFA), has announced on its website that AFA TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party Day rallies on April 15 are now scheduled in 1,837 cities. Meanwhile, the originators of the Tax Day Tea Party concept at taxdayteaparty.com list hundreds of Tea Parties scheduled for April 15…”  http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/election/974

                                                       THE ORIGINAL TEA PARTY

“What events led up to the First Continental Congress?

On March 5, 1770, waterfront workers attacked 9 British soldiers who fired, killing 5 colonists…

The Sugar Act of 1764, first of a series of taxes by Parliament, was placed on sugar, coffee, and wines imported by the colonies…”

The 1765 Stamp Act placed duties on nearly every kind of document, from newspapers to legal papers

In 1767, the Townshend Acts imposed several taxes…

What was the purpose of a Committee of Correspondence? http://www.ushistory.org/carpentershall/history/faq.htm

What events led up to the Boston Tea Party?http://www.ushistory.org/carpentershall/history/faq.htm

Also in 1773, Parliament granted a monopoly on tea shipments to the East India Company, then nearly bankrupt. The Company, which did business only with Loyalist merchants, undercut other merchants, even smugglers. John Hancock, one of the country’s richest men and most threatened by the new tea policy, helped instigate the Boston Tea Party (December 17) when 150 men, dressed as Mohawk Indians, dumped the tea cargo of three ships into Boston harbor. The East India Company was holding a seven-year surplus of tea from India and could be financially ruined if it was not sold.

Why was a general assembly of the colonies called? http://www.ushistory.org/carpentershall/history/faq.htm

In 1774, as a consequence of the Tea Party, Parliament passed  a series of bills defending the remaining tea tax of the Townshend Acts, closed the port of Boston and nullified the charter of Massachusetts.”…

What is the true story of Paul Revere’s ride? http://www.ushistory.org/carpentershall/history/faq.htm

On April 18, 1775, 700 British troops crossed the Charles River and marched toward Concord, hoping to cut off the rebellion before it started by capturing guns and powder stored there. Two lights in the steeple of North Church in Boston alerted Paul Revere and Billy Dawes…”

Remember clubs & organizations don’t want to attract unstable or temporary (flip-flop) members anymore than you want to be aligned with a group that fails to represent the majority of your thoughts, interests or beliefs.  No one is perfect and no organization is perfect. If you are seeking perfection, it is unrealistic because you will not find it.  Assure that any group or organization is appealing to your passions, whether it is based in faith, a hobby, a sport, a profession, a political party, etc.

911 SOLEMN REMINDERS

Bookmark and Share

The reminder of September 11, 2001 should be easier to handle as time passes. Typically this is how it works in the healing process. One of the largest more recent sores that was beginning to form a scab was ripped off again and salt and bleach were poured directly into the wound that we know all too well as 911. As a result the nation is further polarized and accusations are flying wildly. How do we unify a nation that houses representatives and members from every race, religion, nationality, culture, creed, political affiliation and economic class? We don’t know but we do know that anything short of freedom is not an option. How do we proactively work toward identifying “the enemy” without clumping millions of innocent people into that same  category? There are an array of opinions and perspectives. Do we have sufficient skills and resources to identify extremists from non-extremists and everyone in between? It is confusing and this country has been dealing with this age old problem throughout history. WHERE, HOW & WHEN do we draw the lines? The key is to follow the principles & standards this country was based on. This is easier said than done for large numbers of the U.S. population, since this is the same population that can’t agree on the notion that the U.S.A. is founded on Christian principles and standards. Back to square one…

Here are some solemn statistics of 911 in 2001 in the event anyone questions why numerous Americans are having a difficult time moving beyond this attack which resulted in multiple murders, destruction and lives being changed forever. It is the reason we are witnessing protests across the nation.

At least 2,998 people died. this includes the 19 known terrorists.  Other statistics say the number is currently 3,497 people.

There were 5 terrorists on three of the four planes (the two planes that crashed into the Twin Towers and the plane that struck the Pentagon). There were 4 terrorists on the plane full of courageous passengers that brought it down in pure sacrifice in Shanksville, PA. 87, 60, 59, & 41 were the number of passengers on each perspective plane. We are not counting the terrorists as passengers. Other statistics may vary slightly.

343 New York Fire Dept. firefighters + paramedics

60 NYPD officers & Port Authority officers

1,402 occupants in Tower One

614 occupants in Tower Two

3,051 children lost one or both parents that day.  327 of the people murdered were from 53 other countries or nations. America lost the most lives obviously. The United Kingdom lost 67, South Korea lost 28, Canada lost 27, Japan lost 26, Columbia lost 17, Jamaica, Mexico & the Philippines lost 16 each, and Australia & Germany lost 11 people.

None of these statistics account for the number of people who lost limbs, eye sight, hearing, massive amounts of skin from severe burns, permanent lung damage… You get the picture. These numbers also don’t address the psychological and emotional damage which fuels the nightmares, anxiety attacks, paralyzing panic and simply renders otherwise productive and active people dysfunctional from day to day. There are the thousands of workers who saw sights we cannot imagine. They did not even find whole bodies, day after day, week after week and month after month. This is just a sliver of the chunk of America’s heart that was left at Ground Zero, Shanksville and the Pentagon.

Don’t forget the World Trade Center was bombed by terrorists on February 26, 1993 when a truck containing explosives drove into the lower level garage of the North Tower. Six people were killed and approximately 300 people were injured.  Rick Rescorla, Vice President of Security for Morgan-Stanley/Dean-Witter was aware of the vulnerability of the World Trade Center Towers prior to the 1993 and 2001 terrorist attacks.  He was an American hero originally from England and we had the pleasure of benefiting from his skills until his death in the 911 attacks.  His preparedness saved hundreds of lives. http://www.rickrescorla.com/

We also want to recognize and thank Betty Ong for going against protocol. It was her actions & ability to remain calm that helped us to identify this as a terrorist act instead of a terrible accident.  She was a flight attendant of the first plane. Thank you to all of the heroes.

Two trillion in damages and counting… http://www.iags.org/costof911.html

BLOGGING BY BEST SERVICES ONLINE, OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL BLOGS, WILL DEDICATE ITS BLOGS TO THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS ON 11-02-10.

As we write blogs about unemployment and jobs, since we are in fact recruiters, we realize that many of our readers, clients and candidates have great interest in the political influence over jobs, unemployment and their bank accounts. Employers and candidates have been hit heavily, which is why we are facing eight million lost jobs. These aren’t just lost for a year. This has been going on since 2007 with no real improvement in sight. This is the third year.

President Bush and/or President Obama may have prevented a sixteen million job loss event. We will never know one way or the other so all we can do is focus on what we do know and that is that the market is moving but for those out of work it is stagnant because is it not moving quickly enough. Every blog and every other source of media is addressing the “changing of the guard” from a democratic rule to a republican rule that will likely take place after the mid-term elections of November 2010. How many of us made it out to the polls over the last several months to cast our primary ballots? We know we walked in and walked out with no lines at prime times for voting as opposed to the massive lines that formed when the presidential race between Senator McCain and Senator Obama was at stake. Everyone had hopes and dreams for something better and something different. We do it at every major election whenever we are facing less than favorable times. We keep hoping that someone, some administration, some magical combination of congressional members and Supreme Court Justices will pleasantly surprise the people of America. When will we learn?

We didn’t get what we wished for and every one and their mother has the perfect response as to why it didn’t happen. So we look onward to these Mid-Term Elections, because without the hope of something more, we are facing the same limited growth we have been facing since President Bush was in office. We’ve said it countless times before. It is unfair and unjust to blame President Bush or any other president because the way the economy operates and feeds off of countless variables, the failure of the economy could have started during any one of the last five administrations.  We must simply look for solutions and allow the elected politicians who we like or don’t like to accomplish the tasks at hand. This goes for democrats, republicans and everyone in between. If republicans gain the majority, then lets show our support and stay on them through continual phone calls to your state representatives to make certain they know they are accountable to you and me.

Lets make certain no matter who is in the White House, Senate and House of Representatives that we hold them accountable for working together haromoniously and nothing less is acceptable. WE EXPECT RESULTS. We must remain active at our local, state and federal levels. Regular phone calls have to be made to our representatives or emails and letters need to be sent. Keep it professional and respectful of course, but get your message out there over and over again. Our duties don’t stop at the voting booth, for those of us who take it that far.

Our duties never stop. Every last one of us is on notice that in politics a lot of unfair and unjust things take place. We no longer have the right to pretend we are shocked or surprised. The shock part should be over by now. What will you do to reduce or prevent the lack of productivity, bureaucracy, inner social politics, bad influences, anit-proactive behavior and anti-progressiveness throughout all levels of government? No matter who is elected to office, they all become susceptible to the political traps so we must work on supporting our politicians to rise above and stay above those negative influences. They must be made aware they are accountable to the people. Every media source will continue playing on the vulnerabilities & emotions of America. We fall for it every time. Opinions are fine, but how do you move people from the inside-out to better their circumstances and predicaments? How do we improve our current state now that we have identified our dissatisfaction with the lack of jobs and economic growth?

Carry the battle to them. Don’t let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive and don’t ever apologize for anything.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?       JOIN OUR DISCUSSION

Well we are already here. Our first Monday in the month of September. End of summer, start of football season or is it more than that?

WHEN WAS THE FIRST LABOR DAY?

1882 on September 5th in New York City organized by Peter J. McGuire (carpenter) as a march/parade from City Hall to Union Square then on to Reservoir Park for a picnic. The event included 10,000 workers and their families.

WHEN WAS LABOR DAY FORMALLY ESTABLISHED?

                   1894

WHAT MADE IT OFFICIAL?

Labor Day became official based on the events surrounding the PULLMAN STRIKE  of 1894 during Grover Cleveland’s administration (The 22nd and the 24th President of the United States, which makes him the only president to have been elected to office twice but not in back to back presidential terms. He is also noted for being the only Democrat elected to office during the lengthy reign of a Republican majority between 1860 to 1912. Cleveland was a conservative in that he was not an advocate for inflation, subsidies for businesses, farmers or even veterans, pricey tariffs, or imperialism ).

WHAT WAS THE PULLMAN STRIKE?

The Pullman Strike was a political battle between the railroads and the labor unions which started in Pullman Illinois.  A company by the name of the Pullman Palace Car Co. suffered a strike of three thousand of its employees because of drastic reductions in wages. You have to understand that rail cars were the most popular mode of travel back then so traffic flow was adversely effected. Anything West of Chicago did not move.  Eugene Debs was the head of the American Railway Union that represented approximately 250,000 workers in 27 states. President Cleveland sent federal troops and marshals to shut down striking because of its ill effects on the nation. From a legal standpoint President Cleveland said it was affecting the U.S. Postal Service’s ability to deliver mail. He was thereby justified in sending troops. 13 union workers were killed and fifty seven were injured. Six thousand members of the union were involved and caused about $350,000.00 worth of damage (nearly nine million today).

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY?

When it was first established nationally, a parade was to take place following a festival to honor, encourage and celebrate the American spirit of trade and labor organizations. Some question the political cleansing attempt on the part of President Cleveland given that it was passed six days after the Pullman strike ended and many of his cabinet members did not believe the president had the right to unleash 12,000 army troops and marshals to the scene.

WHAT IS LABOR SUNDAY?

Labor Sunday is the Sunday before Labor Day. It was established in 1909 to highlight the spiritual and educational elements of Labor Day as it relates to the Bible.

WHAT IS THIS OTHER LABOR DAY – MAY 1ST?

This is an international holiday recognized and celebrated by about eighty countries.  It is also known as the International Workers’ Day or May Day. It focuses on labor unions specifically. It marks the 1886 Haymarket Massacre of Chicago on May 4th. It started out as a rally for striking workers who were pushing for an eight hour work day. Someone threw a bomb at police while police were trying to break up the rally. Police retaliated with gunfire. Eight officers were killed. The majority were killed by “friendly fire”.  To this day it is unknown how many civilians were killed.  Eight men were tried. Four were convicted and executed and one man committed suicide in prison. Please take special note that the prosecution was convinced that none of the eight defendants were involved in throwing the bomb.

We so often get caught up in thinking the era we live in is the most volatile, the most corrupt as every generation wishes for the “old days” when matters were simpler, people were kinder, and there was a niceness in the air. Let this be a lesson and a strong reminder to all of us that corruption and suspicion of corruption go back long before any one of us was born. There is much more to many of these stories, but we don’t want to make the blog an entire American history lesson. Illegal searches were conducted and freedom of speech was squashed during this time.

Perhaps we need to look a little more carefully at Labor Day and its true meaning from all perspectives. Some of us recall May Day when we were children, but that is a holiday that has gone by the way side for the most part in this country.

I HEAR GOOD & BAD THINGS ABOUT UNIONS:

Many people believe unions to be useless today. Many people take for granted the working conditions they have today and are unaware that those limited hours, pay, vacation time, sick time, and other benefits were as a result of labor unions fighting and its members dying for improved working conditions. Nothing is a given in this world unless you understand its history and continue to demand that it remain on the “books”.  Some form of American unions have been around since the start of this country.

WHATS THE BIG DEAL ABOUT CHILD LABOR LAWS?

Unions were instrumental in establishing child labor laws. Most of us are too young to know of a time when children as young as three years of age were put to work for twelve hour days, no school, and were working in conditions that most adults could not survive in.  The Industrial Revolution sparked the need for even more children working in small, tight, dangerous spaces that adults could not reach because of their size. Children worked in mines, around dangerous machinery, chimneys, prostitution and more. Because of the unbearable hours, malnutrition, no health care, children would sometimes fall asleep on the job. Even though they were working side by side with their parents and siblings, it was not unusual for a shop boss or supervisor to beat the child. The parents could not fight back because it would mean the loss of jobs for the entire family. Essentially it was about two steps higher than slavery minus the racism. This was nearly every company across the board. So it wasn’t as if you could argue unfair treatment, quit and get another job with a sanely operated company.

To give you an idea of how barbaric our society was back then, and by we I mean every continent on the planet, it was a big milestone when Britain came through as the first nation to pass a law in favor of children. Its laughable now, but then it was a huge relief to many families and children. It fell under the title of FACTORY ACTS in the early 1900′s. Children under the age of 9 were not allowed to work at all. Chidren between the ages of 10 and 17 were limited to a twelve hour work day, which indicates they were working sixteen or more hours per day prior to the law. We still have sweat shops and worse still today. The poorer the country the fewer child labor restrictions there are.

WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE U.S.A.?

1.7 million children UNDER THE AGE OF 15 were said to be working in 1900 in the U.S.A. in the fields of industry.  By 1910 that number had climbed to 2 million. Labor unions were already up and running, fighting and battling for rights for everyone. The issue was that as with any movement, the extremists are the gutsiest of all, but with that extremists mentality comes a number of harsh negatives. The union leaders in the 1700′s and 1800′s and beyond were known to be violent, unruly, coercive, and intimidating to co-workers and political officials. Many would argue that if they weren’t, nothing would have been accomplished with those in power in America. It was only through fear that politicians were motivated to rein in the questionable employment practices of large company owners and executives. Opposition to unions, even today, allege that unions are socialistic and no longer necessary. In fact many would argue that we have swung too far in over compensating for our history and now we are dealing with ungrateful, selfish, nondedicated workers who have a sense of entitlement and take advantage of the system. WHERE DO YOU STAND ON THIS ISSUE

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?       JOIN OUR DISCUSSION

Always remember humans are charged with keeping one another in check. It doesn’t matter if you are the President of the United States, a CEO of a major corporation, a clerk at a retail store or you are out of work on disability. Honesty and integrity should be at the top of every man and woman’s list because no one is any more important or any less valuable than the other. Every single one of us impacts, shapes and influences our employers, family, friends, children, community, the nation and the world. We are each representatives of this list. We have an obligation to be the best we can be to our employers and to the people who fought and still fight for the luxuries we enjoy today.

HAPPY LABOR DAY!

AMERICA’S PASSION, OBAMA VACATION, U.S.A. ECONOMIC STATUS

Bookmark and Share

There is a lot of buzz about the First Lady, Michelle Obama, taking a vacation to Spain. Everyone has heard every comment that could possibly be made about the matter from good to bad to indifferent. Many argue it was her own money so she can do what she wants. Others say that secret service still cost a pretty penny, not to mention the cost of Air Force One. We also heard arguments that no other First Lady’s travel plans have been scrutinized to this degree & the retort is to continue to do wrong things can’t be justified by past behavior of prior First Ladies. Everyone presents a good argument. What we find so fascinating is the degree of passion that fuels these statements from all sides of the table through the major Internet social networks.

People are angry, defensive &  frustrated. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are for or against President Obama. There is just a lot of anger in the air. We witnessed an entire trail of commentary about this subject and when it was all said and done, it left a massive pocket of emptiness. People shared their opinions & in the end things remained the same. Our favor is with the re-ignition of the economy, building bridges between vast differences, & solving problems.  Everyone agrees our issues MUST be resolved.

It’s become increasingly difficult for people to maintain focus in a proactive & progressive manner when the political, economical & social climates have been so drastically polarized. We believe in being passionate. The difficulty is balancing passion against deconstructive behavior & thought.

One thing all Americans should keep in mind is that we are all full of an equal amount of fire & fury. How we convey that fire & fury is a testament to our maturity, understanding & acceptance of each other.  This country was not built by a group of laid back impassioned people. Instead it was built & established by overly aggressive & passionate risk takers who were successful in their insurmountable attempts at reaching their goals. Admittedly those characteristics worked in their favor during the construction of this current nation. That passion must be  harnessed properly & we should look to them as an example of what we are truly capable of as a nation.

It doesn’t take but fifteen seconds to become entrenched in a boiling argument with a total stranger over a subject that’s near & dear to our hearts. We are being pushed further apart than we’ve been in a long time. Is there anyone at the controls, at the helm of all of this? Is there a benefit to keeping us so incredibly polarized and literally despising one another based on bipartisanship while our economy fails to receive the nourishment it so desperately needs?

How can we merge our efforts & dampen our conflicting views to serve a greater cause? What group or organization can we turn to to assure that their personal agenda does not override the greater goal of the members who support it? Can anyone be trusted anymore? How do we take this terrific energy, a ball of pure heart-felt passion from all the varying view points & redirect it so that it is a positive force that cannot be challenged by anyone?

It seems the American people lost trust in the system. Certain sectors of the population feel completely alienated when one group tries to rally people around it. Many are jilted and fearful  of potential underlying motives & subtle personal agendas of various groups based on experience.

Every American pretty much agrees the country can benefit from generating new long term permanent jobs. That’s the easy part. Now how do we create these jobs? What sectors would generate the most jobs with the most diversity in skill level and pay scale? Its confusing. We’ll say it again. At the end of the day, we want the same basic things. Let none of us lose sight of this. We can’t allow division by the media or any other sources. We can’t afford it.

Don’t we owe the founders our thanks by honoring them for their blood, sweat & tears? We should be honoring everyone who played a part, willingly or unwillingly, in the establishment of this nation.

How would any of them react to what is taking place today between us? We suspect they may acknowledge that they too had blatant irreconcilable differences, but never once did these differences stand in their way of their common bond of wanting to prosper.

Recently we heard a gentleman’s observation about Christians. Over the years he noticed  in newly formed Christian bonds that many Christians are driven to identify where they differ in their interpretation of various parts of Christianity. He strongly advised a change in people’s approach to one another. Instead the two should be celebrating their likenesses. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out this advice can be applied to any faith, culture, political arena, economic status, etc. It applies to every one.

Find the commonality & revel in that before walking down a path of destruction, because there is plenty of time for that once your bond is strong enough to handle it. Build a solid foundation first. Only your family will accept you for everything you are and are not (and there is no guarantee of this) because of the solid foundation.

Our founders could not have accomplished anything if all of their disagreements led with the interjection of hostility, sarcasm & innuendos.

U.S. TROOPS COMING HOME? IRAQ WAR VS AFGHANISTAN WAR

Bookmark and Share

42% of Americans said the war was worth fighting.

55% of Americans said it was not worth fighting the Iraq War.

Certainly everyone has heard by now that President Obama is working to bring an end to the Iraq War by sending approximately 90,000 troops home. HOWEVER many journalist argue there is merely a shift of troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. It may or may not be the same troops in some cases. Below is a chart of numbers which reveals an overall relief for troops in the range of 30,000 after calculating the Afghan shift. This chart should help you see what so many articles will speak about, but we are not certain how simple it will be to decipher as we believe it is as shown below.  These figures are comprised of numbers released by the White House and other sources.

January 2009:           144,000 troops in Iraq                   33,000 troops in Afghanistan            TOTAL = 177,000

July 2010:                    81,000 troops in Iraq                   87,000 troops in Afghanistan            TOTAL = 169,000

September 2010:        50,000 troops in Iraq                    96,000 troops in Afghanistan           TOTAL = 146,000

These do not reflect the number of troops who are deployed throughout the world in support of either the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, but are stationed in neighboring countries or in nations which have some political association, serve as a potential threat &/or are threatened by the forces America is fighting.

The 50,000 remaining troops in Iraq are intended to be more peace keeping-training for Iraqis-protect US civilians-overseeing equipment transfers & more. Needless to say counterterrorism is a given on this list too. By the end of next year all American troops are suppose to be completely out of Iraq per a previous agreement between former President Bush & the Iraqis.

The deadline to begin remove troops from Iraq was mentioned as August 31, 2010 early on in this recent presidency.  As U.S. controlled bases lose their U.S. troops, Iraqi troops are expected to assume control and begin rebuilding their social, political and economic structures.

Back in February of 2008 the 48% of Americans believed that pulling out of Iraq would drastically effect the U.S. economy for the better. 20% are have said to believe it would help to some degree. 43 % said increased spending on health care, education, & housing programs would benefit the economy considerably.  36% werein favor of cutting taxes in order to improve the economy.

Wars no longer produce jobs the way they use to because our technology is different and we have grown accustomed to & overly dependent upon outsourcing. As a result the average American is no longer able to see the benefit or actually benefit economically from wars as it stands now.

Cost of war in Iraq has been estimated at $2billion per week as far back as 2008 and 2006. It is said we have spent $1.25trillion dollars since the start of the war. This does not include figures for Afghanistan. Keep in mind the war grows more costly as time goes on and this does not even address the cost of life which is impossible to place a number on the life of a loved one.  As of 2010 it is expected that we will have spent a total of $3.2trillion total for both Iraq and Afghanistan. We wanted to post death tolls, but we can’t seem to confirm conclusive and accurate figures as the U.S. & Iraq are in disagreement about July 2010′s calculations from Iraq about their death toll.
