Growth in the market is slow but it is occurring.

Steel & metal workers in Illinois and Missouri felt the positive shift.

Producers of medications and medical equipment in the health care industry also witnessed a rise in demand.

Since February 2010, a higher number of people, for the first time, voluntarily left their jobs than were asked to leave through layoffs or termination.  In addition and more recently, for the first time in a long time fewer people have been laid off in Januray of 2011 and the number of jobs created exceeded the number of lost jobs across the nation. 

Part of the struggle and challenge is that each time we take a step forward we seem to be facing a new disaster. When we say we, we mean the whole world. 

Greece was unable to repay their tab on social programs, overspending and more in April 2010. Greece just didn’t have the cash. Greece is part of the Euro Currency Union so that a default without repercussions is not feasible. Experts denote that Ireland, Italy, Portugal & Spain are in a similar position. Experts claim it is just a matter of time before these other European countries follow suit behind Greece. 

We have been faced with the oil spill which continues to draw on our resources and while taking jobs away it is also adding jobs. We must remain focused on the creation of jobs at all times while remaining aware of the loss of jobs. Our energy and resources should be invested in the creation of jobs or in finding jobs for people.

The recent flooding in Tennessee and more recently in Arkansas has not helped businesses in those areas.

GOOD NEWS:

As the number of people who quit their jobs out numbers the employees who were terminated, experts state with confidence that this shows that employees  are being given options, job offers, and income. It shows there is cash in the market to generate and regenerate small to mid-size businesses, households, financial institutions, educational institutions, government sectors, insurance companies, factories, manufacturers,  and more. 

Interest rates are expected to remain low and continue to be aggressively worked on to maintain such attractive levels.

We are not facing issues with inflation because influential businesses and their leaders realize the damage that would follow in such a fragile economy.

Even with the fall-outs of earthquakes, oil spills, war, floods, etc. we must keep in mind that we still managed to stay afloat. Again we call to action progressive and proactive behavior toward solutions and avoid investments of time and efforts in dwelling on the challenges and obstacles. Great men and women must overcome great obstacles & great nations are the only nations that can conquer great challenges. These events have not stopped us. Events of the past of our ancestors have not beaten us either.

Stocks jumped upward as of Friday,  6-2010. Ben Bernanke (Chairman of the Federal Reserve) estimates continual growth being slow but steady and we are not expected to fall back into a recession.

Courage is the key for the entire world. Embracing courage at a time when you are not feeling very courageous is the only time courage is put to the test.

HURRY EMPLOYER TAX INCENTIVES FOR 2010!

As of now employers STILL have until December 31, 2010 to hire an unemployed individual in order to qualify for a $1,000.00 tax break. In most cases the person must be unemployed for at least sixty days (60 days). The employers in most cases will also qualify for an additional $1,000.00 tax break if the employer retains that employee for at least one year.  This means an employer could receive a two thousand dollar ($2,000.00) tax break for every unemployed person they bring on board. 

*This incentive was initiated by Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York (Chuck Schumer).  It is known as The HIRE Now Tax Cut Bill.

*Republican Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah is noted with partnering with Schumer on this bill.

*The bill went into effect in the earlier part of this year, March of 2010. 

*New York employers received tax incentives for their hiring of over three hundred thousand (300,000) employees.

*Senator Schumer was forced to fight for an extension of this bill in August of 2010. That extension was granted through 12/31/10.

*The bill was introduced on February 3, 2010 (2/3/10) and so any private sector employee hired from a sixty day plus unemployed status after the date of 2/3/10, will qualify the employer for the tax incentive.

*Another incentive is that the employer does not have to pay the employer’s share of the required Social Security payroll tax on that employee for 2010 (6.2.%).

*Remember the bill was introduced on 2/3/10, but passed in March 2010 and extended in August 2010.

*Will they extend it again into 2011? It would only be logical to do so, but we have been unable to find any details within the recent tax break extensions which address this specific issue. We are not sure if they are considering that a separate issue. We do know that the re-elected Senator Schumer is pushing for an extension into 2011. 

*Employers are skiddish of the unemployed and this serves to soften the blow of the risk in hiring someone who has been unemployed for months, if not years. In turn the unemployed who were victims of these mass layoffs at least stand a chance at evening the playing field when it comes to interviewing against their competition which are currently employed.

*SPELL IT OUT:  A private sector company that hires five previously unemployed candidates could earn a tax incentive of $10,000.00.  If that employer hires ten unemployed individuals they may earn up to $20,000.00 in tax incentives and so on.

*As of August the average unemployed worker found themselves unemployed for at least ten months. We are certain those numbers have a wider spread now that we are in December 2010.

We are entering the tail end of October and we remain in the thick of the effects of a recession that started years ago. Is it reasonable to expect this recession to be repaired by now? Is it reasonable to expect some improvement through partial repair by now?  Are there repairs that have occurred but that are invisible to us? Could the country have collapsed completely as we know it, but we were spared such a tragedy because of the government’s work we fail or refuse to recognize? We speak to people every day who are unemployed and when its all said and done their unemployment compensation has been exhausted and they no longer care about what is or isn’t fair when evaluating our leaders. The unemployed want and need results. They are desperate and ready to lean on Democrats, Republicans, Tea Party supported candidates, Libertarians, Green Party candidates and Independents. The main focus is gambling on who we THINK might have the solutions and more importantly who has the most EXPEDIENT SOLUTIONS to unemployment, generating new jobs, motivating the cycle of spending through a stronger sense of financial security. How can Americans earn cash and gain wealth? How can businesses increase business and profits? How do we stabilize our economy and crawl out of this recession as quickly as possible? We can start by voting.

Well we are already here. Our first Monday in the month of September. End of summer, start of football season or is it more than that?

 

WHEN WAS THE FIRST LABOR DAY?                                               

1882 on September 5th in New York City organized by Peter J. McGuire (carpenter) as a march/parade from City Hall to Union Square then on to Reservoir Park for a picnic. The event included 10,000 workers and their families.   

WHEN WAS LABOR DAY FORMALLY ESTABLISHED?

                   1894

WHAT MADE IT OFFICIAL?

Labor Day became official based on the events surrounding the PULLMAN STRIKE  of 1894 during Grover Cleveland’s administration (The 22nd and the 24th President of the United States, which makes him the only president to have been elected to office twice but not in back to back presidential terms. He is also noted for being the only Democrat elected to office during the lengthy reign of a Republican majority between 1860 to 1912. Cleveland was a conservative in that he was not an advocate for inflation, subsidies for businesses, farmers or even veterans, pricey tariffs, or imperialism ).

 

WHAT WAS THE PULLMAN STRIKE?

The Pullman Strike was a political battle between the railroads and the labor unions which started in Pullman Illinois.  A company by the name of the Pullman Palace Car Co. suffered a strike of three thousand of its employees because of drastic reductions in wages. You have to understand that rail cars were the most popular mode of travel back then so traffic flow was adversely effected. Anything West of Chicago did not move.  Eugene Debs was the head of the American Railway Union that represented approximately 250,000 workers in 27 states. President Cleveland sent federal troops and marshals to shut down striking because of its ill effects on the nation. From a legal standpoint President Cleveland said it was affecting the U.S. Postal Service’s ability to deliver mail. He was thereby justified in sending troops. 13 union workers were killed and fifty seven were injured. Six thousand members of the union were involved and caused about $350,000.00 worth of damage (nearly nine million today).

 

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY?

When it was first established nationally, a parade was to take place following a festival to honor, encourage and celebrate the American spirit of trade and labor organizations. Some question the political cleansing attempt on the part of President Cleveland given that it was passed six days after the Pullman strike ended and many of his cabinet members did not believe the president had the right to unleash 12,000 army troops and marshals to the scene.     

 

WHAT IS LABOR SUNDAY?

Labor Sunday is the Sunday before Labor Day. It was established in 1909 to highlight the spiritual and educational elements of Labor Day as it relates to the Bible.

 

WHAT IS THIS OTHER LABOR DAY – MAY 1ST?

This is an international holiday recognized and celebrated by about eighty countries.  It is also known as the International Workers’ Day or May Day. It focuses on labor unions specifically. It marks the 1886 Haymarket Massacre of Chicago on May 4th. It started out as a rally for striking workers who were pushing for an eight hour work day. Someone threw a bomb at police while police were trying to break up the rally. Police retaliated with gunfire. Eight officers were killed. The majority were killed by “friendly fire”.  To this day it is unknown how many civilians were killed.  Eight men were tried. Four were convicted and executed and one man committed suicide in prison. Please take special note that the prosecution was convinced that none of the eight defendants were involved in throwing the bomb.

We so often get caught up in thinking the era we live in is the most volatile, the most corrupt as every generation wishes for the “old days” when matters were simpler, people were kinder, and there was a niceness in the air. Let this be a lesson and a strong reminder to all of us that corruption and suspicion of corruption go back long before any one of us was born. There is much more to many of these stories, but we don’t want to make the blog an entire American history lesson. Illegal searches were conducted and freedom of speech was squashed during this time.

Perhaps we need to look a little more carefully at Labor Day and its true meaning from all perspectives. Some of us recall May Day when we were children, but that is a holiday that has gone by the way side for the most part in this country. 

I HEAR GOOD & BAD THINGS ABOUT UNIONS:

Many people believe unions to be useless today. Many people take for granted the working conditions they have today and are unaware that those limited hours, pay, vacation time, sick time, and other benefits were as a result of labor unions fighting and its members dying for improved working conditions. Nothing is a given in this world unless you understand its history and continue to demand that it remain on the “books”.  Some form of American unions have been around since the start of this country.   

 

WHATS THE BIG DEAL ABOUT CHILD LABOR LAWS?

 Unions were instrumental in establishing child labor laws. Most of us are too young to know of a time when children as young as three years of age were put to work for twelve hour days, no school, and were working in conditions that most adults could not survive in.  The Industrial Revolution sparked the need for even more children working in small, tight, dangerous spaces that adults could not reach because of their size. Children worked in mines, around dangerous machinery, chimneys, prostitution and more. Because of the unbearable hours, malnutrition, no health care, children would sometimes fall asleep on the job. Even though they were working side by side with their parents and siblings, it was not unusual for a shop boss or supervisor to beat the child. The parents could not fight back because it would mean the loss of jobs for the entire family. Essentially it was about two steps higher than slavery minus the racism. This was nearly every company across the board. So it wasn’t as if you could argue unfair treatment, quit and get another job with a sanely operated company.  

To give you an idea of how barbaric our society was back then, and by we I mean every continent on the planet, it was a big milestone when Britain came through as the first nation to pass a law in favor of children. Its laughable now, but then it was a huge relief to many families and children. It fell under the title of FACTORY ACTS in the early 1900′s. Children under the age of 9 were not allowed to work at all. Chidren between the ages of 10 and 17 were limited to a twelve hour work day, which indicates they were working sixteen or more hours per day prior to the law. We still have sweat shops and worse still today. The poorer the country the fewer child labor restrictions there are.

 

WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE U.S.A.?

1.7 million children UNDER THE AGE OF 15 were said to be working in 1900 in the U.S.A. in the fields of industry.  By 1910 that number had climbed to 2 million. Labor unions were already up and running, fighting and battling for rights for everyone. The issue was that as with any movement, the extremists are the gutsiest of all, but with that extremists mentality comes a number of harsh negatives. The union leaders in the 1700′s and 1800′s and beyond were known to be violent, unruly, coercive, and intimidating to co-workers and political officials. Many would argue that if they weren’t, nothing would have been accomplished with those in power in America. It was only through fear that politicians were motivated to rein in the questionable employment practices of large company owners and executives. Opposition to unions, even today, allege that unions are socialistic and no longer necessary. In fact many would argue that we have swung too far in over compensating for our history and now we are dealing with ungrateful, selfish, nondedicated workers who have a sense of entitlement and take advantage of the system. The oil spill has produced some jobs. We have been able to help an alarming number of people with the information from our prior post known as JOBS CREATED FROM THE OIL SPILL.

This got us thinking that perhaps there are other events, circumstances, organizations and companies that are hiring unskilled and skilled labor on a temporary, part time or full time basis to assist with certain disasters, events, catastrophes and more (oil spill, earthquake, storm duty, flood duty, tsunami, mining collapses, etc).
